Return trip to Mildura brings another win for Peculatus

Aug 21, 2015

The race did not pan out as planned but Peculatus produced another terrific performance to notch his second win in three starts at Mildura.

Peculatus came from beyond midfield to break his maiden over 1300m at Mildura on July 20 before performing solidly when he stepped up to 1608m for his second-up run at Swan Hill.

The son of Golden Snake settled last before working home to be beaten less than three lengths in an effort that encouraged trainer Mandy Shillito to give Peculatus a crack at Benchmark 64 company over 2000m.

Shillito found the GSD Architects BM64 Handicap (2000m) at Mildura for Peculatus, giving the gelding a chance to return to the scene of his debut win.

The Ballarat trainer booked Jacob Rule to ride Peculatus and the jockey had to make a decision when caught three-deep around the first turn of the $23,000 contest.

The pace was only moderate up front, so Rule decided to take the initiative to send Peculatus to the lead with 1400m to run.

Peculatus settled beautifully for Rule, finding a terrific rhythm, which gave the jockey the chance to increase the speed a long way from home.

Peculatus had his opposition off the bit at the 600m mark but the developing stayer maintained his effort all the way to the line, finishing 1-¼ lengths clear of his opposition to complete an excellent win.

Peculatus’s second win from 14 starts earned connections another $12,650 winner’s cheque, taking his stakes tally to more than $36,000.

Congratulations to the owners of Peculatus and all involved with his latest victory.
